Some recovery happens by itself i.e. without any therapy
Most recovery is in the first few months

Other parts of the brain do the work of the damaged area
Rehabilitation is usually given by a multi-disciplinary team
In our unit we have physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech & language therapy, clinical psychology, nursing and medical services
In rehabilitation your difficulties are treated e.g.
Paralysis

weakness of muscles
Walking difficulties
Loss of arm / hand movement

Shortened muscles
Problems with communication e.g. talking, understanding what people say, reading and spelling

Rehabilitation takes a long time
Progress may be slow
It is easy to get discouraged
Decide your goals
Focus on your goals
Be positive
Practice the tasks you get in therapy
Do this when you are alert and fresh
Don’t practice when you are tired
Remember recovery is slow, but persevere
Talk to other people in the same situation
Do as much for yourself as you can, even if it takes longer
Get enough sleep
