- Mobility means movement
- The return of movement varies from person to person
- There are different ways of moving around after stroke
Walking

- If you can stand and balance you might be able to walk
- Your physiotherapist advises you if you need a walking stick or walking frame
- You might need a brace or splint to help you walk better
- Do not wear slippers, or high heel shoes for walking
- Wear comfortable well-fitting shoes for walking
Wheelchairs

- A wheelchair may help you get around
- Different wheelchairs suit different people
- Ask your physiotherapist or occupational therapist about this
- A motorised wheelchair is not good if you have problems with your vision
Hoisting

- A hoist helps someone else move you
- You might need a hoist if you find it difficult to sit or stand
- A hoist helps you to move from bed
to a chair or chair to the
toilet
- A hoist is safe for you and your carer
- Moving without a hoist might hurt your shoulder and / or hurt your carer’s back or neck
